Are there any special schools for ADHD girls? Everything around here seems to be for boys only.

yes most special needs school are mixed school, and most of them deal with all different special needs.

When brandon was at main stream, they really didnt know how to cope with him, so they pushed him right away, he was only allowed to do half days and when he was in school, he was in a room of his own with just a TA no teacher no nothing, he was treated so badly, it was out of sight out of mind, there was no help offered to me or brandon at all from his main stream. he wasnt aloud of school trips incase he showed anyone up, one time i was going with him on a trip and because he wouldnt put his hat on they wouldnt let him go incase he kicked off, to which he did when they told me he wasnt going.

I was so pleased when he got his statement and they moved him to a special school, he loves it there.

xx

PostSubject: Re: special schools   Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:21 pm

We've just got our SEN draft statement and that says Joshua will need a special school. We want mainstream but think we are slowly realising that he would not cope and his time there would be miserable. He had a terrible time at his first nursery (currently on No 3 since sept) which was mainstream and it ended when I refused to let him go there ever again and the SEYS team calling a crisis meeting with the nursery. He was moved to enhanced nursery but after just four sessions they said he would be better in a nursery with just special needs (Leapfrog). Thankfully it is at the same setting as the enhanced but mornings rather than afternoons now.

He started in January and he seems to be enjoying it judging by the state of his clothes when he gets back. Yesterday they used different dyes on the snow to encourage the children to explore the snow. Joshua came home and the whole of the right side of his trousers (both front and back) and his jacket are all BRIGHT pink!!! His teacher was so embarrassed that he got in such a mess but I just said that I would rather he had fun and came home looking like that everyday (usually paint though) than have him unhappy and clean. If he can't have fun when he's 3 when can he?

We are looking at a couple of Special Needs schools after half term -we had to ring up and get the SEN reply bit extended so we can name a school. We still really want him deferred he will only be four by just over a month and he is not ready for school yet.

I think what I'm most worried about him going to a special school is he will be even more different to children who aren't 'special' and will end up being bullied etc outside of school setting. He has already had some horrible comments from children not much older than him -one in particular had me in tears and I am just so glad Joshua doesn't understand. I am just scared that this will get worse as he gets older and he will need more independence and will be more open to bullying. Hope that makes sense.

Does anybody have any words of wisdom about that?

some children can be really nasty but you have got to hold your head high and dont take any notice, i know it can be very hard to ignore but you have got too.
Brandon had a real problem with bully from the children from where we live, but i have spoken to them all explaning why brandon is special and why he id different, most of the children are now great with brandon, i still get the odd comment from a child but now most of the kids tell them to leave it out.

Will he be happier at a special school actually learning and enjoying himself or miserable at an ordinary school on his own and not learning.
When Joshua gets low because he thinks he's stupid we remind him that he is just different and we are all differnet in our own special ways - sometime sit works sometime sit doesn't but it does usually sink in and he starts to point out how some of his friends are different.
My experience is that children round home will pick on them even if in normal school anyway so go for what is best for him!
